MANILA (Reuters): Five children were among six people killed
in a fire which razed a row of houses in a slum in the Manila
district of Paranaque on Sunday morning, fire officials said.
Official Daniel Mercado said the fire broke out at dawn and
was brought under control after about three hours. The victims
included a 66-year-old woman and five children under 10, he said.
Other officials said the fire started in the house where the
elderly woman and three of her grandchildren died because of
suffocation. Two other children in neighboring houses were killed
as well, they said.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.
