Six injured in Brebes brawl

BREBES, Central Java: Six people were injured in a brawl involving residents of five villages in Brebes, 200 kilometers west of the provincial capital of Semarang, early this week.

Antara reported on Wednesday that the brawl on Monday night was triggered by youths competing for the allocation of parking spaces at rest stops along a main interprovince route.

Traffic along the road connecting Central and East Java was congested for four hours during the incident.

Two youth groups pelted stones at each other. Hundreds of their respective supporters fought with knives and axes. The brawl ceased after security personnel and Brebes regent Samsudin Sagiman arrived at the site.

Col. Sueb Sasmita, chief of the Brebes police, said the two groups agreed to reconcile when their leaders met on Tuesday. (rms)
