Six gold thieves still at large
JAKARTA (JP): East Jakarta police yesterday were still chasing the suspects in a robbery of six kilograms of gold.
The Suara Pembaruan afternoon daily reported that the crime, which involved six suspects, happened on Thursday at around 4:30 p.m. on Jl. Raya Malaka.
The owner of the gold, Apiu, and his driver had just returned from their shop in Klender, also East Jakarta.
On the way home they suffered a puncture in one of the tires. As the driver parked the car a motor cycle overtook them and one of the passengers smashed the left window with a large stone.
Apiu tried to fight the attackers but one of them pressed a machete against his neck.
The five others aimed what the police consider to have been toy guns at the victims. They then sped away in different directions with the gold.
The East Jakarta police detective chief, Maj. Endang Sandjaya, said that judging by the sudden punctured tire, Apiu may have been under observation by the robbers for some time. (anr)
