The Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) has imposed administrative sanctions on six companies holding Forest Utilisation Business Permits (PBPH) after repeated forest and land fires (karhutla) were discovered in their working areas.

The total burned area reached 1,511.55 hectares. Director of Forestry Supervision, Administrative Sanctions and Civil Affairs at the Ministry of Forestry, Ardi Risman, asked the companies to improve their forest fire control systems and restore the affected land.

“Government coercion gives consequences to companies to fulfil the obligations that have been set, starting from improving the fire control system to restoring affected areas within a specified time limit,” said Ardi in a written statement on Tuesday (25/8).

In affected areas, companies can be ordered to carry out vegetation restoration. Specifically on peatland, restoration obligations include improving hydrological functions through water management arrangements, canal blocking, rewetting of peat, and monitoring of groundwater levels.
