Situbondo sugarcane land expansion reaches 598 hectares
The Government of Situbondo Regency, East Java, has recorded that the expansion of agricultural land for sugarcane planting up to June 2026 has reached approximately 598 hectares, exceeding the additional sugarcane land area target of 350 hectares set by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Situbondo Regent Yusuf Rio Wahyu Prayogo stated that the sugarcane land expansion surpassing the Ministry of Agriculture’s target is the result of joint efforts by all parties in supporting the national movement to accelerate sugar self-sufficiency.
“This dry-field paddy area is one of the points of sugarcane land expansion, and planting has begun here on about 5 hectares,” said Regent Rio during a simultaneous sugarcane harvest and planting activity for the Bongkar Ratoon programme with East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa, held virtually in Juglangan Village, Panji District, Situbondo, on Thursday.
Regarding the target for the sugarcane replanting or ratoon replacement programme in Situbondo, he continued, as of mid-June 2026 it has reached around 1,800 hectares, covering both seed planting in irrigated rice fields and dry-field paddy areas.
According to Rio, the target for Situbondo’s Bongkar Ratoon programme this year, set by the Directorate General of Plantations at the Ministry of Agriculture, is 3,076 hectares, and currently the realisation of replanting or sugarcane seed planting to increase productivity has reached 1,800 hectares.
“We are certainly optimistic about achieving the Bongkar Ratoon programme target and becoming a contributor to the sugar self-sufficiency proclaimed by President Prabowo Subianto,” he said.
Acting Head of the Agriculture and Food Security Office of Situbondo Regency, Quratul Aini, added that from the tens of thousands of hectares of sugarcane plants in Situbondo, the target is to produce up to around 65,000 tonnes of sugar in 2026.
“The target of more than 65,000 tonnes of sugar is the total combined target of the three sugar factories in Situbondo, namely PG Assembagoes, PG Pandji and PG Wringinanom,” she said.
Meanwhile, sugarcane farmer Mamat from Juglangan Village, Panji District, said that he deliberately rented the hilly land to turn it into dry-field paddy for sugarcane planting.
“Originally this was hilly land. I worked it under an eight-year lease system for 13 hectares, because I am optimistic that per hectare the sugarcane can reach one thousand quintals. For irrigation, we use a borehole well,” he said.
