Situbondo District Court imposes strict maximum fine of 3 million rupiah for illegal street racing
The Situbondo District Court in East Java has taken firm action against illegal street racing by imposing a maximum fine of 3 million rupiah on offenders.
The court’s strict sentencing reflects public concern about illegal street racing, which disrupts public order and poses significant safety risks to other road users.
“The court has imposed a maximum fine of 3 million rupiah against illegal racers—the verdict is non-negotiable,” said Alto Antonio, the spokesperson for the Situbondo District Court, on Friday.
Antonio noted that 73 illegal racers were sentenced to the 3 million rupiah fine today, payable by each offender. Those failing to pay will have their motorcycles confiscated and auctioned by the prosecutor’s office.
The judges’ reasoning considered the dangers posed by street racing, which threatens the safety of both the racers and other road users. “The judges’ considerations included that illegal racing distresses the community and endangers the lives of participants and others,” Antonio stated.
The maximum fine is intended to serve as a deterrent not only to the racers themselves but also to spectators, as he explained that spectators are viewed as integral to the racing activity. “Supporting illegal racing by watching is the same thing, because there would be no racing without spectators,” Antonio said.
Payment of the fine can be made from today until seven days after the verdict. Failure to pay will result in the confiscation and auction of motorcycles by the Situbondo Public Prosecutor’s Office.
A local resident, Fendi, expressed full support for the court’s firm action. “We certainly support the strict measures taken by the Situbondo District Court. The maximum fine of 3 million rupiah can serve as a strong deterrent to young people who frequently engage in illegal street racing that endangers other road users,” he said.
