The United States (US) and China, long-standing rivals, are reportedly planning to meet to discuss artificial intelligence (AI). The meeting is scheduled for September.

The talks will occur ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the US on 24 September 2026, according to five sources cited by Reuters. The meeting aims to reduce risks amid concerns over the advanced capabilities of each nation’s AI models. Both countries are considering regulating these advanced AI models.

Four sources said the September talks will be led for the US by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Three sources mentioned that other participants from both countries, the agenda, and the location of the discussion are still under consideration. The sources noted that plans for this meeting are in the early stages of preparation.

There has been no further comment from either the US or China regarding the report. Bessent did not directly confirm the news, but he expressed concerns about intellectual property rights and the need for rules and standards on AI models. ‘We are finding watermarks from US large language models on many Chinese-made models, and that is unacceptable,’ Bessent said during an interview with Fox Business Network. ‘We will be investigating this in the coming days or weeks,’ he added.

Both the US and China currently dominate AI development globally. Many popular models originate from the two countries and are widely used by people around the world. However, both nations are also trying to outdo each other’s dominance. The US is known to be aggressively limiting the export of its advanced AI chips to China.
