Site of First Flag Raising in Gorontalo Demolished

The demolition of a former post office building in Gorontalo City, believed to be the site where national hero Nani Wartabone first raised the red-and-white flag, has sparked opposition from the family and cultural activists. A representative of the Nani Wartabone family, Iwan Hulukati, stated that the demolition proceeded after the landowner won a lawsuit against the Gorontalo City government. He explained that the family had previously requested a postponement through letters to the regional government, relevant ministries, and cultural preservation bodies. “We wrote to the mayor, ministries, and related parties asking for a delay and joint discussions, but the demolition has continued regardless,” he said. The building, a former post office residence, holds significant historical value for Gorontalo. According to the family, it was at this location that Nani Wartabone first raised the Indonesian national flag in the region. The demolition is therefore seen as potentially erasing a historical site that forms part of the Gorontalo people’s struggle. Iwan stressed that the family does not oppose the construction of a hotel on the site. However, they propose that the historic structure be preserved and incorporated into the new development. “We have suggested that they go ahead and build the hotel, but the historical site should not be demolished. It could be turned into a gallery or become part of the hotel complex so its historical value is maintained,” he said. The family is now considering further steps, including reporting the matter to the Ombudsman and relevant ministries. A letter of objection had previously been sent to the local government, the police, and cultural heritage authorities. Meanwhile, Moch. Andri WP, Head of the Cultural Preservation Office for the North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, and North Maluku regions, expressed regret over the demolition of the historically significant building. He noted that his office only learned of the demolition after receiving public reports and immediately conducted a site inspection. Andri said his office is currently coordinating with various parties, including the local government and the landowner, to seek a temporary suspension of the demolition.
