Sister cities join Jakarta's anniversary festivities

Damar Harsanto, The Jakarta Post/Jakarta

The city administration has prepared a series of events involving residents and members of the international community here in the month-long celebrations to mark Jakarta's official 478th anniversary, which falls on June 22.

"We want to hold various events, ranging from sports tournaments, parades, religious ceremonies and festivals involving residents from all walks of life," said anniversary committee chairman Deden Supriadi at City Hall.

The events, Deden said, would be held at various locations across the capital.

"Hopefully, we will attract tourists to come here given the array of attractions we are putting on during the celebrations," Deded said.

He said that Jakarta's sister cities would also take part in the celebrations through the Jakarta Sister City Basketball Tournament and the Jakarta International 10K.

Jakarta has a number of sister cities and provinces, including Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, Rotterdam, Los Angeles, Berlin, New South Wales and Paris.

The anniversary celebrations will be initiated by Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso with a three-minute fireworks display on Sunday, June 5, at the Betawi cultural heritage kampong in Setu Babakan, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta.
