Single Suicide Case Impacts Psychologically 30 People Nearby
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has emphasised that suicide is a very serious public health issue. The traumatic impact of a single act of suicide does not only affect the individual but also casts a shadow over approximately 30 people in their surrounding environment.
Imran Pambudi, Director of Health Services for Vulnerable Groups at the Ministry of Health, stated this during a Media Briefing to commemorate World Suicide Prevention Day in Jakarta. “From what I have read, one death case can impact around 30 people,” said Imran on Wednesday (9/9).
The dozens of affected individuals can include family members, friends, and even first responders who may be traumatised by witnessing injuries or assisting in a hanging. “It will have a significant impact on the 30 people around them. Families may struggle with why their child chose to end their life, or friends may feel guilty for not being aware of the struggles of those around them,” he added.
These lingering questions and emotions can deeply affect others. Furthermore, those who survive suicide attempts may face greater impacts, such as permanent disability or diminished mental well-being. Another concern is that individuals who have attempted suicide may be prone to subsequent attempts.
Consequently, he suggested the importance of active listening and creating spaces for open dialogue to understand underlying thoughts. “Through conversation, we can attempt to understand why suicide attempts occur and determine what we can do to help those experiencing suicidal ideation,” he explained.
According to police reports, the number of reported suicide cases has been increasing annually. There were 1,332 cases in 2023, rising to 1,403 in 2024, and reaching 1,503 in 2025.
“I am certain that there are actually many more, or cases of suicide that go unreported. This does not even include suicide attempts where the individual survives; those are also quite numerous and such cases are often covered up,” he concluded.
Estimates from the IHME suggest the actual figures are much higher than reported. He expressed hope that while suicide rates should decrease, the reporting and documentation of such cases should increase.
