Single PDI congress
Single PDI congress
From Jayakarta
I would like to respond to the article Put an end to the PDI conflict with a single congress published in Jayakarta (June 17).
If the article describes the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) as a kite being chased by children, I imagine the PDI as a chaotic family in which the parents finally get divorced.
Most of the children of the divorced family support their mother who is seconded by her wealthy parents.
The father is bullheaded, thinks a lot of himself and is supported by his parents. The mother feels she has to uphold her reputation and that she has been disadvantaged. Hurt by her husband, she senses she is on the right side and supported by the majority of the children. Anyhow, she remains at one with the situation.
Many relatives advise the couple to reconcile. But due to his stubbornness, the husband does not want to hear any of the suggestions. He is not prepared to unite his family.
The above metaphor is only an example and does not represent the reality.
Soerjadi's PDI camp feels its position is legal and supported by a strong side. It is not agreeable to unification within the party.
If Soerjadi had a noble soul and was not ashamed to resign, I am convinced that the PDI would be whole and strong again.
I have been a PDI sympathizer since its name was still the Indonesian National Party (PNI). I appeal to Soerjadi to show a chivalrous attitude and not be ashamed to quit.
I also ask the PDI to unite again. If a congress is to be held, just hold one single congress to unify Soerjadi and Megawati as proposed by a legislator of the PDI faction.
