Singer stars in drug trial

BANDUNG, West Java: Prosecutors are seeking five-month jail terms for a jazz singer, identified as KA, and his girlfriend for possessing marijuana.

Prosecutor Tatang Wardjita told a panel of judges presided over by Mohammad Taufik at the Bandung District Court yesterday that the two defendants were proven guilty of violating the narcotics law.

The two were allegedly drunk and in possession of marijuana when police stopped and searched their car in an operation in the city last December.

KA claimed in a previous court session that he obtained the illegal drug from his girlfriend, identified as Mar.

Mar said she was unaware the pack of cigarettes, which she bought in Pasar Baru, Jakarta, just days before the arrest, contained marijuana.

The trial was adjourned until tomorrow to hear the defendants' plea, Antara reported yesterday. (rms)
