Singaporean Banker Optimistic About Indonesia's Economic Prospects
A senior executive from Singapore’s DBS Bank has expressed strong confidence in Indonesia’s economic outlook, describing it as one of the most promising growth opportunities in Asia. Lim Chu Chong, President Director of DBS Indonesia, stated that the country’s prospects are particularly driven by a projected surge in energy demand and extensive infrastructure development over the coming decades.
Speaking at the CNBC Indonesia Coffee Morning in Jakarta, Lim noted that Indonesia’s electricity needs are expected to increase sixfold, from the current level to over 1,800 terawatts by 2060. He argued that the real challenge is not a lack of opportunity, but rather the ability to mobilise capital, build bankable projects, and ensure a reliable energy supply. “The question is not about the opportunity. The demand is there. The real challenge is mobilising capital, building bankable projects, and securing reliable energy supply on a massive scale,” he said.
Lim also highlighted the increasing complexity of global supply chains, noting that geopolitical tensions, commodity price volatility, and the energy transition have made resilience a strategic priority over mere cost efficiency. He observed that companies which thrive are not necessarily those with the lowest costs, but those that create greater certainty around their operations and maintain investment readiness amidst uncertainty. DBS, he added, aims to be a strategic partner for businesses navigating this volatile landscape, rather than just a provider of financing.
