Singapore to mend Malaysia fences

SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong will
make a one-day visit to Malaysia on Thursday to meet with Prime
Minister Mahathir Mohamad, it was announced here on Wednesday.

The surprise visit followed rumors of important developments
in bilateral ties between the two neighbors, whose often stormy
relations hit a new low in recent months.

A statement from the Singapore prime minister's office said
the meeting, proposed by Mahathir, will "resume discussions on
outstanding matters" taken up at their last meeting in southern
Malaysia's Johore state in April.

During that meeting, the two leaders stressed the need for
closer collaboration during the Asian financial crisis and the
importance of harmonious bilateral relations.
