Singapore Rocked as Muslim Minister Resigns Amid Scandal Involving a Woman

Singapore has been rocked by a scandal involving a senior politician, after Acting Minister for Muslim Affairs Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim resigned from politics on Monday, citing shame over his conduct with a woman. Faishal, who also served as Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and was a member of the People’s Action Party (PAP), stepped down after admitting his interactions did not meet the standards expected of a public office holder.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong revealed that his office was alerted to the matter about a month ago. Following the report, the cabinet conducted interviews with both Faishal and the woman to understand their respective accounts. Wong noted that while most of their interactions occurred via online messages, they also met in public on several occasions. After careful consideration of the facts and consultation with the Attorney-General’s Chambers, it was determined that no criminal offence had been committed by either party.

Despite the absence of criminality, Faishal acknowledged that his behaviour constituted a serious lapse in judgment. In his resignation letter, the married father of two stated that he was stepping down with immediate effect for personal reasons, admitting his conduct did not align with the responsibilities entrusted to him. He clarified that while there was no physical relationship, he failed to establish clearer boundaries early in the interaction. The government has appointed Senior Minister of State for Defence and Sustainability and the Environment, Zaqy Mohamad, as the new Acting Minister for Muslim Affairs.
