Singapore ranked most globalized country

Singapore (ANTARA News) - Singapore has been rated the world's most globalized country, according to the Globalization Index compiled by management consultancy AT Kearney and Foreign Policy magazine.

The index showed that foreign trade and investment flow more freely in Singapore than other countries in the survey, DPA reported citing the Straits Times newspaper Thursday.

Singapore's residents also have the greatest ease in making personal connections such as travelling abroad and making overseas phone calls.

Next on the most-globalized list are Switzerland, the United States, Ireland and Denmark.

In one of the biggest moves, Australia climbed four spots to eighth place, helped by high commodity process and greater investment.

The countries are judged on 12 criteria of openness in four main categories: economic integration, personal contract, technological connectivity and political engagement.

Singapore was ranked first and third on the economic and personal fronts respectively. In terms of technological connectivity and political engagement, it was 12th and 29th, respectively.

Singapore was ranked first in the inaugural study in 2001 and last year. The latest study, based on data in 2004, ranked 62 countries that account for 96 percent of the world's economic output and 85 percent of its population. (*)
