Singapore PM Seeks to Strengthen TNI and SAF Relations

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with Indonesia by expanding cooperation in various priority sectors. The commitment was conveyed by PM Wong in a joint press statement with President Prabowo Subianto during the Leaders’ Retreat at Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, on Monday. During the meeting, the two heads of state also agreed to strengthen institutional relations between the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). PM Wong expressed appreciation for President Prabowo’s significant role in enhancing military relations between the two countries. “Under our defence cooperation agreement, the SAF and TNI are exploring the development of training facilities in Baturaja, West Kalimantan, and the Siabu Air Weapons Range,” Wong said. He encouraged the two militaries to intensify joint exercises. “These initiatives will provide mutually beneficial opportunities for us to train together and enhance our defence relations,” Wong stated. Meanwhile, in the energy sector, Wong assessed that Indonesia has great potential in developing new and renewable energy. Singapore, he said, is ready to be Indonesia’s strategic partner in harnessing this potential, including through the construction of one of the largest solar projects in Morowali, Central Sulawesi Province. “Today, we have also signed an MoU between Danantara and Keppel Electric, Sembcorp Industries, and Singapore Energy Interconnections. This will provide a clear roadmap for negotiations and discussions between the parties, paving the way for the electricity project,” Wong said.
