Singapore PM Lawrence Wong Affirms Long-Term Investment Commitment in Indonesia

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has affirmed his country’s confidence in Indonesia’s economic prospects by ensuring a sustainable, long-term investment commitment. Wong conveyed this during a joint press conference with President Prabowo Subianto following the Indonesia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday (6/7). Wong stated that Indonesia’s success is crucial for Singapore because the two countries are very closely intertwined. According to him, Singapore’s trust is not merely a political statement but is proven through consistent capital flows over the years. “Singapore has full confidence in Indonesia’s future. We want Indonesia to succeed because the futures of our two countries are closely linked. Our confidence is reflected in concrete actions,” Wong said. Singaporean investment in Indonesia is considered to have a broad impact, ranging from job creation and downstream industry development to digital infrastructure construction. Wong sees that growth opportunities in Indonesia remain very large, so Singapore will continue to maintain its position as a major investor. One of the main focuses highlighted is the development of the Batam, Bintan, and Karimun (BBK) area as a new digital economy centre. This area is considered to have successfully transformed into a dynamic digital hub that attracts global companies. In addition, the two countries are beginning to explore cooperation in advanced technology. Wong also appreciated the achievements of the Kendal Industrial Park (KIK), which is now entering its first decade. Currently, KIK has reached full capacity and is planned to be expanded to 1,000 hectares to accommodate new investment and support sustainable economic growth. In closing, the two leaders committed to strengthening regional supply chain resilience. This step is taken to ensure both countries can support each other in facing various challenges and global economic shocks in the future.
