YANGON (Reuters): Singapore's Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong arrived in the Myanmar capital yesterday for talks with the military government and the expected signing of a pact on mutual visa exemptions.
Analysts expect Goh, on a 24-hour visit, to discuss Asia's financial problems and possibly to review with his hosts a proposal for members of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) to conduct trade in non-dollar regional currencies.
Myanmar joined ASEAN last year.
Goh, visiting Myanmar for the second time as Singapore premier, is due to visit Hlaing Thayer industrial zone in a western Yangon suburb.
He was scheduled to breakfast with Singapore businessmen in Yangon today before leaving for Thailand.
