Singapore PM Goh to meet Soeharto
JAKARTA (JP): Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong is to meet with President Soeharto here today to discuss the economic crisis in Indonesia, it was announced yesterday.
"Mr. Goh will discuss with the President the Indonesian financial crisis and the debtors/creditors forum in which a Singapore banker will act as a facilitator," a statement from the prime minister's office said.
The Singapore leader will also explore ways to help resolve the problems Indonesian banks are facing in their trade financing, added the statement made available to The Jakarta Post.
Goh's last visit to Jakarta was on Jan. 13 as part of emergency initiatives by, among others, the United States, the International Monetary Fund and Singapore to halt Indonesia's deepening economic crisis.
Singapore has pledged US$5 billion in standby loans to Indonesia as part of a $43 billion rescue package led by the IMF.
Goh will return to Singapore tomorrow, the statement said. (pan)
