Singapore Official Praises Indonesia at Launch of New 'Bridge'
Singapore has offered praise for Indonesia’s strategic position. The commendation was made by Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry, Gan Kim Yong, at the inauguration of the Nongsa-Changi Landing in Batam on Monday (20/7/2026).
He noted that the strengths of the two countries complement each other in submarine cable infrastructure. Gan explained that Indonesia brings assets of market scale, talent, land, and significant potential in renewable energy.
“Our strengths between Batam and Singapore, between Indonesia and Singapore, are complementary. Singapore offers global connectivity, a trusted business environment, and relationships with companies and customers worldwide. Indonesia brings scale, talent, land for future growth, and significant potential in renewable energy,” Gan stated.
He also touched on the development of the Batam-Bintan-Karimun (BBK) area under the bilateral cooperation. This region is set to become a dynamic digital hub.
Relations between the two countries are known to be growing closer, marked by the Nongsa-Changi submarine cable cooperation and a recent meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
“In an increasingly uncertain global environment, it is ever more important for Singapore and Indonesia to continue strengthening our partnership. We are working together to facilitate investment, strengthen supply chain resilience, and develop new areas of growth and expansion,” he said.
The Nongsa-Changi submarine cable will serve as a digital connecting bridge. The infrastructure, with a capacity of more than 1.6 petabytes, will support the growth of data centres and digital services in Batam, as well as cross-border business.
Gan explained that this infrastructure will bring more opportunities for both Singapore and Indonesia, as well as the ASEAN region, in the future.
The cooperation between the two countries is also believed to open up opportunities for companies from both nations to collaborate. Furthermore, it is hoped that all citizens can gain new skills and experiences.
“Ultimately, economic cooperation delivers value through the capabilities we build, the businesses we grow, and the opportunities we create for our people,” Gan concluded.
