Singapore faces high terrorism threat amidst global conflicts

Singapore continues to face a high terrorism threat, with the nation and its interests remaining attractive targets for terrorist elements, according to Singapore’s Internal Security Department on Thursday (10/9).

In its terrorism threat assessment report, the department stated that terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda and ISIS, continue to recruit supporters online and inspire attacks worldwide. Meanwhile, conflicts in the Middle East are increasing the risk of attacks outside of conflict zones and contributing to radicalisation.

The potential return of foreign terrorist fighters to Southeast Asia also adds to the heightened threat across the region.

The report also highlighted that in Southeast Asia, Islamic extremism remains a concern, while violent extremist narratives from far-right groups and nihilistic movements are gaining more support and have emerged in several recent attacks.
