The Badung Regency administration (Pemkab Badung), in collaboration with the central government, will construct an overpass at Simpang Udayana, Jimbaran Village, South Kuta, to unravel a major congestion point in the area and its surroundings. Physical construction of the overpass at the intersection connecting the Denpasar area, Udayana University campus, Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK), and Nusa Dua is scheduled to begin in 2026.

Badung Regent I Wayan Adi Arnawa stated that the initial plan was to co-finance an underpass construction at the Simpang McDonald’s Udayana with the Governor. However, thanks to the Governor’s efforts, the central government, through the Ministry of Public Works, is now ready to fully finance the construction of the overpass. He made these remarks during the groundbreaking for the South Ring Road (JLS) segment 4 Labuan Sait-Pedati in Pecatu, South Kuta District, Badung, on Monday (27/7/2026).

The construction of the flyover is urgent because Simpang Udayana is one of the worst congestion nodes hindering the mobility of residents and tourists heading to the Uluwatu area. The Badung Regency administration is moving to complete all initial planning documents so that the infrastructure project is ready for physical execution. Adi Arnawa noted that congestion at Simpang Udayana has become a major scourge in southern Badung, and since his inauguration on 20 February 2025, the administration immediately entered the revised regional budget to compile the feasibility study and Detail Engineering Design (DED) documents for the project.

Although the central government will fully bear the construction costs of the overpass, the Badung Regency administration remains fully responsible for land provision. The land acquisition process around the intersection has now been completed. Adi Arnawa confirmed that the regency’s task was to prepare and clear the land, and this has been successfully resolved. He added that after discussions with the Head of the relevant agency, work on the Simpang Udayana overpass will begin in 2026.

The Simpang Udayana overpass is designed to interconnect with a new traffic flow scheme from the Udayana University campus area and the Simpang Wanagiri junction. This traffic dispersal scheme is prepared so that vehicles from the Uluwatu direction can pass smoothly onto the flyover without triggering new bottleneck points. Adi Arnawa explained that the flow of vehicles from the Udayana University direction will also be able to connect directly to this overpass towards the national road or the toll road.

The Badung Regency administration is optimistic that the presence of the Simpang Udayana overpass will restore comfortable accessibility to premium tourist destinations in South Badung. The realisation of this strategic project, resulting from regional and central synergy, is expected to support the sustainability of the tourism sector, which is the backbone of Bali’s economy.
