Signs That Allah Is Remembering Us

How does a Muslim know that Allah SWT is remembering them? Imam Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Ghazali, in his work Ihya Ulumuddin, quotes a story from a tabi’in named Tsabit al-Bunani, who explained that a servant can know this when they constantly remember Allah through dhikr.

In Ihya Ulumuddin, the story is recounted of Tsabit al-Bunani, a figure from the tabi’in generation known as a hadith expert and someone who consistently read the Alquran every day. Imam Al Ghazali referred to Tsabit al-Bunani as a scholar of wisdom.

Tsabit al-Bunani once said, “Indeed, I know when my Lord, Allah ’Azza wa Jalla, remembers me.” The people who heard this statement immediately asked him, “How do you know that?” Tsabit al-Bunani replied, “If I remember Him, then He will surely remember me.”
