Sigi Regent's Office and Tadulako Auditorium Damaged by M 6.7 Earthquake

An earthquake measuring magnitude 6.7 in Palu, Central Sulawesi, has caused damage to buildings, including impacts in Parigi Moutong and Sigi Regencies. The Sigi Regent’s Office, a hotel, and a university auditorium were among those reported damaged. “Currently, we have received reports of moderate damage in three areas, including the Sigi Regent’s Office,” said BMKG Director of Engineering Seismology, Potential Geophysics, and Time Signals Teguh Rahayu during a press conference broadcast via BMKG’s YouTube channel. Rahayu explained the data was based on reports from BMKG Technical Implementation Units and the local Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) as of 12:00 WITA. Several houses in Parimo also suffered minor damage. “Then in Palu city, at Hotel Santika, a café in Palu, the Tadulako University auditorium, Hotel Best Western, and Star Kitchen shop,” Rahayu stated. Meanwhile, BMKG Head Wijayanto confirmed the M 6.7 Palu earthquake does not have tsunami potential. He urged residents not to panic excessively. “We are also monitoring several tide gauge stations around the earthquake source area. Firstly, in the Parigi area, we did not detect any rise in sea level in Poso,” Wijayanto said. Wijayanto stated that BMKG, through several local stations, has conducted monitoring. He emphasised there was no significant water rise. “There was only a slight rise at Pantoloan Port of about 7.5 centimetres. So it is very, very small. We can confirm this is not a dangerous hole,” Wijayanto said.
