Sigi (ANTARA) — The Sigi Regency Government in Central Sulawesi is urging all village heads and sub-district chiefs to support the Pakagali Pakagaya Ngata cleanliness programme in the region.

Sigi Regent Moh Rizal Intjenae said Pakagali Pakagaya Ngata serves as one of the instruments for managing cleanliness and creating a healthy environment in Sigi Regency.

“Pakagali Pakagaya Ngata is naturally a priority programme and forms part of the local government’s innovations,” Regent Rizal said when met by the press in Sigi on Tuesday.

He noted that all religions teach that cleanliness is part of faith.

“It is therefore unseemly if government offices, including the yards of residents’ homes in Sigi Regency, are still strewn with rubbish, appearing squalid and dirty,” he said.

He explained that the Pakagali Pakagaya Ngata programme can change the community’s mindset to maintain clean and frugal living.

The regional government routinely conducts evaluations of the cleanliness programme by inviting sub-district chiefs and requesting reports from the PKK (Family Welfare Movement) Driving Team and the local Environmental Agency.

“If there is a village that is not yet clean, I will issue a reprimand, because that area is not supporting the cleanliness programme in Sigi Regency,” he said.

Regent Rizal stated that going forward he would appoint each Regional Apparatus Organisation (OPD) as a coordinator in every sub-district to directly oversee cleanliness in Sigi Regency.

“I have established a routine Friday activity for environmental clean-ups involving the entire community, including schoolchildren,” he said.

The Pakagali Pakagaya Ngata programme aims to develop villages through a culture of cleanliness and frugal living.

Waste production in Sigi Regency reaches 30 tonnes per day.
