Sigi Education Office suspends teaching activities following earthquake

The Education and Culture Office of Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi, has halted teaching and learning activities across all educational units, including kindergartens, primary schools, and junior secondary schools, following an earthquake in the area. “We are suspending face-to-face learning activities in all educational units from 17 to 18 June 2026,” said Head of the Sigi Education and Culture Office Hadjar Modjo in Bora on Wednesday. He stated that the decision to suspend teaching and learning activities was made to ensure the safety of students, educators, and education staff, as well as a precautionary measure against the impact of the earthquake in Sigi Regency. “The government is prioritising the safety and security of all students, teachers, and education staff,” he said. “Each school principal, together with relevant parties, must inspect the condition of school buildings before learning activities resume,” he added. Hadjar noted that all students must remain in a safe environment and under parental supervision during the holiday period. According to data from the Central Sulawesi Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), as many as 800 houses were damaged by the earthquake in Sigi Regency, comprising 720 lightly damaged, 68 moderately damaged, and 12 heavily damaged houses. In addition to residential homes, damage also occurred to two office units, 15 places of worship, one micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) unit, and a connecting bridge between Kamora B Village and Tongoa Village.
