Sigi Earthquake, Central Sulawesi: 3 Residents Dead, 1,652 Homes Damaged
The number of fatalities from the earthquake that shook Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi, has increased to three. “The current death toll is now three, whereas previously it was only one,” said Ahmad Yani, Head of the Disaster Division at the Sigi Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), on Thursday (18/6). According to Ahmad, one victim from Berdikari Village had a history of illness. When the earthquake struck, the victim suffered a heart attack and was rushed to a hospital in Palu City. “This victim was not included in the initial report because the data collection process was still ongoing when the first figures were released,” he said. Meanwhile, a victim from Kamarora Village sustained an impact to the abdomen during the quake and had a history of a tumour. “Both victims received medical treatment at Torabelo Hospital and Bala Keselamatan Hospital,” he explained. Based on BPBD Sigi data, the earthquake affected 2,109 families or 6,412 individuals. “In addition to the three fatalities, 91 people suffered minor injuries and 17 sustained serious injuries,” he stated. The recorded damage from the earthquake includes 1,652 affected homes, comprising 1,472 with minor damage, 111 with moderate damage, and 69 severely damaged. According to Ahmad, the affected area is quite extensive, covering several villages in the sub-districts of Palolo, Nokilalaki, Tanambualava, and Lindu. “Kamarora A Village is the area with the highest number of affected residents, reaching 1,511 people, followed by Kamarora B Village with 377 people,” he revealed. The earthquake also damaged several public facilities, including nine offices, 44 places of worship consisting of ten mosques and 34 churches, and 13 school buildings. “As of now, the data collection process is still ongoing because reports from a number of affected areas continue to come into the BPBD command post,” he concluded.
