SIG Utilises Alternative Fuels and Clean Energy to Reduce Emissions
Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) continues to strengthen its green transformation by utilising alternative fuels and clean energy to reduce emissions in its operations.
The company utilises industrial waste, biomass, and urban waste processed into alternative fuel refuse-derived fuel (RDF), in line with efforts to reduce emissions while improving efficiency.
SIG Corporate Secretary Vita Mahreyni stated in Jakarta on Thursday that amid the growing urgency of climate change issues, this state-owned company in the cement industry is integrating sustainability principles into its business strategy through the optimisation of renewable energy and waste management innovations.
This approach, she said, not only impacts the environment but also strengthens the company’s competitiveness.
“Through various strategic initiatives, SIG proves that sustainability performance can go hand in hand with business performance, even enhancing the company’s operational resilience,” she said.
She stated that throughout 2025, the utilisation of alternative RDF fuel increased by 24% to 681,000 tonnes, equivalent to a reduction in coal usage by up to 467,000 tonnes. This achievement also drove an increase in the thermal substitution rate to 9.77%.
These initiatives not only contribute to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions but also provide waste management solutions while opening new economic value, including for the agricultural sector through biomass utilisation.
In addition, the company is expanding the use of clean energy through the installation of solar panels at various operational units and the utilisation of Waste-Heat Recovery Power Generation (WHRPG) technology to convert waste heat into electricity.
These efforts have successfully reduced Scope 1 GHG emissions intensity by 21% compared to the 2010 baseline, and Scope 2 emissions by 15% compared to the 2019 baseline.
Furthermore, she stated that in the mining sector, the company is implementing sustainable practices through post-mining land reclamation. By 2025, SIG has reclaimed 628 hectares of land in various operational areas.
The commitment to sustainability has also received recognition through six PROPER Green awards for 2025 from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, achieved by several SIG cement plants and subsidiaries.
