Social media today is so openly accessible that it can be used by anyone, including children.

Makassar (ANTARA) - The Regent of Sidenreng Rappang (Sidrap), South Sulawesi, Syaharuddin Alrif, stated that Government Regulation (PP) Number 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic Systems in Child Protection (PP Tunas) serves as protection for children from the negative influences of social media.

Syaharuddin Alrif, speaking in Makassar on Friday, said that social media today is so openly accessible that it can be accessed by anyone, including children who are not yet of the appropriate age, which is certainly very concerning.

“Children can easily access and obtain content that they are not yet old enough for because social media is so open. The presence of PP Tunas acts as a barrier for children from the negative impacts of social media,” he said during a break in the meeting of the Indonesian One Data Law Drafting Team at the South Sulawesi Governor’s Office.

He explained that the Sidrap Regency Government, since last year in line with the South Sulawesi Governor’s directives, has implemented restrictions on gadget use for students. And following the issuance of PP Tunas, the use of social media, especially in school environments, will certainly be tightened further.

“Restrictions need to be monitored, and teachers must take more strategic steps, such as increasing practical activities so that children focus more on learning rather than thinking about gadgets,” he said.

“Of course, as Regent, I strongly support restrictions on social media for children,” he added.
