The Sidoarjo Regency Government, under the leadership of Regent Subandi and Vice Regent Mimik Idayana, is taking serious steps to anticipate flooding before the rainy season. Several areas identified as prone to inundation have been mapped and are receiving interventions ranging from river normalisation to the preparation of water pumps.

The Head of the Sidoarjo Regency Public Works, Highways, and Water Resources Department (DPUBMSDA), Makhmud, stated that his department is routinely conducting operations in locations requiring intervention. The drainage task force and heavy machinery have been deployed from Monday to Saturday.

These measures are being implemented to ensure that water flow remains smooth while increasing the capacity of rivers and drainage channels to accommodate higher water volumes when rainfall increases.

“Every day, we carry out operations across four technical service units, including the deployment of heavy machinery. We continue to perform routine work in locations that require intervention,” said Makhmud on Thursday (3/9/2026).

According to Makhmud, there are several primary focuses in these handling efforts. These include the normalisation of rivers experiencing siltation and the cleaning of waste accumulation points.

“The third area of our attention is drainage channels that are clogged by water hyacinth or other debris,” Makhmud explained.

These handling efforts are targeted to be accelerated until the end of the year. The Sidoarjo Regency Government aims to ensure that the condition of rivers and drainage channels is ready before the rainy season begins.

“That is our target. We hope to push this through until the end of the year so that during the rainy season, all river flows are smooth,” he added.

Makhmud noted that four regions are being prioritised in these flood prevention efforts: Taman, Waru, Candi, and Tanggulangin.

In the Taman area, the Sidoarjo Regency Government has intervened in several rivers and prepared pumps to anticipate inundation.

“We have intervened in the rivers there, including preparing pumps so that if flooding occurs, the pumps can function effectively,” he continued.

Meanwhile, in the Waru area, the normalisation of the Buntung River is one of the steps already taken. The government also hopes that the construction of a retention basin (bozem) in the area will support water control.

Next, the Candi area is also a priority. The normalisation of the Kedunguling River is currently ongoing to ensure water flow functions optimally during rainfall.

“With our normalisation efforts, the work on the Kedunguling River and other rivers is progressing well,” he added.

Handling in Candi is also linked to the Tanggulangin area. In that region, the Sidoarjo Regency Government is optimising the Pintu River system and the Kedungpeluk pump.

“In Tanggulangin, we are optimising the Kedungpeluk pump, which will hopefully function well,” he said.

In addition to river normalisation, the Sidoarjo Regency Government is preparing new strategies by placing pumps at points that have historically been flood-prone before the rainy season arrives.

The Sidoarjo Regency Government is also adding and procuring large-scale portable pumps to support field operations.

“Our hope is that by the end of October, we can reposition our pumps to various flood-prone locations,” concluded Makhmud.
