Sidoarjo Converts Waste into Energy, Strengthening Environmental Commitment
The Sidoarjo Regency Government has signed a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) for processing waste into electricity (waste to energy) with the East Java Provincial Government and several other regions. This step serves as a strategy to address waste issues while promoting the development of renewable energy.
Sidoarjo Regent, Subandi, stated that the cooperation demonstrates the local government’s seriousness in delivering concrete and sustainable solutions.
“This effort also serves as proof of the Sidoarjo Regency Government’s seriousness in providing concrete and sustainable solutions to waste problems in the area,” said Subandi in a written statement on Sunday (29/3/2026).
He assessed that waste processing is no longer merely an environmental issue but also holds economic added value.
“We welcome this initiative positively as a joint effort to deliver more modern and sustainable waste management solutions. Not only does it reduce the environmental burden, but it also provides added value through the utilisation of waste into electricity,” he said.
On this occasion, Subandi also invited the public, particularly Sidoarjo residents, to play an active role in environmental preservation.
“We urge the community to start sorting waste at home, reducing the use of single-use plastics, and not littering indiscriminately,” he emphasised.
Subandi stressed the importance of maintaining environmental sustainability as a shared responsibility for the future.
“Active awareness and participation from all elements of society are needed so that Sidoarjo remains a safe, healthy, and clean area,” he concluded.
The signing of the PKS was attended by East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa, Minister of Environment and Forestry Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, as well as regional leaders in the Greater Surabaya and Greater Malang areas.
Through this cooperation, waste management is expected to no longer be viewed as an endpoint issue, but rather as an opportunity to produce environmentally friendly energy.
