The awards were presented directly by the Minister of Environment and Forestry/Head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), Dr. Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, S.Hut., M.P., at the Sasono Langen Budoyo building, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), Jakarta, on Tuesday (7/4/2026).

The PROPER Gold award is given to companies that exceed compliance in environmental management. Meanwhile, Green Leadership is an appreciation for CEOs or company leaders who are committed to environmental management and sustainable development.

In his speech, Hanif Faisol expressed appreciation to the award recipients. He stated that the PROPER award is a government effort to enhance environmental compliance.

“We will continue to use the PROPER instrument to improve environmental compliance in business units,” he said at the 2026 PROPER Environmental Awards ceremony at Sasono Langen Budoyo (TMII), on Tuesday (7/4/2026).

“To the company leaders who received PROPER, we extend our thanks. The beyond-compliance efforts you have undertaken contribute seriously, starting from resource efficiency, pollution prevention, and activities that build the community economy directly or indirectly,” he added.

Meanwhile, Irwan revealed that this achievement is the result of the hard work of a solid, creative, and consistent team in maintaining commitment to the environment. This award also serves as the company’s commitment to building public trust.

“This is the sixth PROPER Gold award and the fourth Green Leadership for Sido Muncul. As a company, what we need is public trust. So, one way we build the company is by protecting the environment. Logically, if we are good to the environment, we should be even better to consumers,” said Irwan after receiving the award.

Promoting Energy Efficiency and Zero Waste Concept

Irwan emphasised that preserving the environment is fundamentally something that all parties must do. To date, Sido Muncul has undertaken various efforts to protect the environment, one of which is through the utilisation of Solar Power Plants (PLTS) at the Sido Muncul factory.

“This is our daily life at the factory. We must protect the environment, do everything for a better environmental future, including energy efficiency. We also utilise renewable energy,” said Irwan.

Not only that, Sido Muncul also processes herbal waste or scraps as fuel for energy sources. In this way, no waste leaves the factory, or zero waste.

Several other efforts have also been implemented, such as the use of more environmentally friendly packaging. For example, the Tolak Angin product is now available in soft capsule form, and some products are in bottle form.

Sido Muncul also conducts strict quality control on packaging materials, including checking size, weight, thickness, and packaging design to ensure consistency.

“We also use waste, so our company is zero waste. For packaging, the use of plastic cannot be avoided. But products like Tolak Angin are small in size, so they don’t use as much plastic as food products. However, we are also preparing packaging with glass bottles,” said Irwan.

Processing Hazardous Waste and Community Empowerment

Meanwhile, Sido Muncul’s Environment Manager, Amri Cahyono, revealed that Sido Muncul has implemented various eco-innovations based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), starting from energy efficiency, emission control and reduction, non-hazardous waste reduction, and integrated waste management.

“We are already over 90% using new renewable energy, which can reduce carbon emissions. We also carry out water usage efficiency, processing and reduction of hazardous waste. Sido Muncul also manages biodiversity, where we currently have agrotourism to maintain or develop wildlife,” he explained.

For plastic waste, Sido Muncul also applies structured waste management practices through 2R (reduce and recycle) to create an environmentally friendly business.

“Regarding overcoming plastic packaging waste, we collaborate with our off-takers to utilise plastic waste. We process it in such a way and turn it into boards or panels,” said Amri.

“Then, we now use it as a waste dropbox. We have distributed it to the community and schools. We also collaborate with the Semarang Regency Community Development Agency to distribute it to the community.

Not only protecting the environment, Sido Muncul also promotes community empowerment through the Desa Wisata programme in Ring 1 areas. Ring 1 areas are the CSR programme regions of Sido Muncul that are closest to the company and have the potential to be integrated into one tourism area.

“We don’t just want to be good in environmental management, but we must extend environmental management to the community. So we have a community empowerment programme in Ring 1. We prosper them, conduct social mapping of what they need, and then together we prosper the surrounding people,” he stressed.

Sido Muncul also introduces the SMARTANI (Sentra Mandiri Agro Ternak dan Inovasi) programme as an effort to promote sustainable development and environmental protection in Bergas Kidul Village, Semarang Regency, Central Java.

Through SMARTANI, Sido Muncul assists the Bergas Kidul Village community in building a village-based food self-sufficiency system through various activities, such as rolling livestock banks, agricultural and livestock learning centres, optimisation of limited land with sustainable cultivation practices, and utilisation of organic waste as agricultural production inputs.

“In essence, Sido Muncul has a good vision, which is to benefit the community and the environment.”
