The Ministry of Religious Affairs will hold the Sidang Isbat to determine the start of Syawal 1447 Hijriah on Thursday, 19 March 2026. The Sidang Isbat will take place at the H.M. Rasjidi Auditorium, Ministry of Religious Affairs Office, Central Jakarta.

Director General of Islamic Community Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Abu Rokhmad, stated that the Sidang Isbat is the government’s mechanism for determining the start of months in the Hijriah calendar, particularly Ramadan, Syawal, and Zulhijah. “As usual, the Sidang Isbat begins with a seminar presenting the crescent moon positions by the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Hisab Rukyat Team,” said Abu, as quoted from the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ official website on Thursday.

After the seminar is presented, the next activity is to hold a closed session to discuss the results of rukyatul hilal received from various regions, before finally announcing it to the public.

Abu explained that based on astronomical calculations (hisab), on the day of rukyat or 29 Ramadan 1447 Hijriah, which coincides with today, the hilal’s elevation across all Indonesian regions is above the horizon, ranging from 0°54’27’’ to 3°7’52’’. Meanwhile, the hilal’s elongation angle ranges from 4°32’40’’ to 6°06’11’’.

According to Abu, all hisab systems actually indicate that the ijtimak preceding Syawal 1447 H occurred on 19 March 2026 around 08:23 WIB this morning. However, the determination of the start of Syawal still awaits the results of rukyatul hilal conducted in various regions of Indonesia.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs will monitor the hilal at 117 locations spread across Indonesia. This observation is carried out by the Ministry’s Regional Offices together with district/city offices, Religious Courts, Islamic community organisations, and related local agencies.

The Sidang Isbat will be attended by other parties such as representatives of friendly country ambassadors, Chair of Commission VIII of the DPR, the Supreme Court, Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG), and the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG). Then, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Bosscha of Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Planetarium, falak experts from Islamic community organisations, and members of the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Hisab Rukyat Team.
