Siak rejects harboring deported workers

PEKANBARU, Riau: Siak Regent Arwin A.S. said in Riau on
Tuesday his administration rejected a request from a labor
recruitment agency to use the town as a transit point for migrant
workers deported by the Malaysian government after January's riot
in the neighboring country.

Citing Dumai as an example, Aswin said he did not want his
region to become a base for migrant workers and job seekers
trying to sneak into neighboring countries where they later
create various social problems.

"Our refusal should not be seen as taking an unfriendly stance
toward others, we just don't want our own people to suffer. The
central government should pick up the migrant workers and send
them straight home in a big ship," he said.--Antara
