Shopping Centre Trends Shifting, Malls Now Targeting Visitor Experience and Lifestyle
Changes in urban lifestyles are driving the transformation of shopping centres from mere retail outlets into spaces for social interaction, entertainment, and community activities. Responding to this trend, PT Lippo Malls Indonesia (LMI) inaugurated the transformation of Cibubur Junction into Lippo Icon Cibubur on Wednesday (3/6/2026).
This transformation is part of LMI’s strategy to present destinations that are more relevant to contemporary consumer needs. Beyond offering retail activities, shopping centres are now required to provide more diverse experiences, ranging from culinary and entertainment to community gathering spaces.
Santiwati Basuki, Chief Marketing Officer of Lippo Malls Indonesia, stated that this change aligns with the evolving expectations of the public, who increasingly prioritise experiences when visiting shopping centres. “The transformation of Cibubur Junction into Lippo Icon Cibubur is part of our effort to continuously provide destinations that are more relevant to current lifestyle developments and consumer expectations. We want to offer more than just a shopping centre, but a vibrant, stylish, and engaging space for people to gather, express themselves, build connections, and enjoy a more dynamic, relevant, and meaningful experience,” said Santiwati.
Lippo Icon is a new portfolio concept developed by LMI as a lifestyle destination that emphasises the visitor experience. This concept complements various shopping centre formats previously present in the company’s portfolio, such as Lippo Mall, Lippo Plaza, MaxxBox, and CityWalk.
As the first mall to adopt this new identity, Lippo Icon Cibubur offers superior connectivity as it is integrated with access to the LRT public transport network. The presence of such facilities is expected to reach residents active in the Cibubur and Jakarta areas, including commuters in need of a transit space and a place for activities.
During the transformation process, LMI undertook a thorough renovation of the shopping centre area, ranging from interior and exterior design and building facade development to enhancing the atmosphere of public areas. Several new facilities have been introduced, such as an amphitheatre-style atrium with flexible access, a giant LED screen, and more modern and aesthetic architectural elements.
In addition to physical updates, the concept has been strengthened through a curated selection of tenants oriented towards lifestyle. Strengthened categories include premium food and beverage, family entertainment, experiential retail, as well as beauty and health services.
New tenants include Starbucks, Subway, Krispy Kreme, Blibli, The Palace, K3Mart, Playtopia, Tomorrow, Sociolla, Playworks, Maison Féerie, Huawei, Dairy Queen, and GAGA. The presence of these various brands is expected to strengthen Lippo Icon Cibubur’s position as a new lifestyle and entertainment destination in East Jakarta.
According to Santiwati, shopping centres no longer function solely as places for economic transactions, but also as spaces that bring people together through various social and cultural activities. Therefore, in addition to introducing new tenants, Lippo Icon Cibubur will also develop various community programmes and cultural activities tailored to the character of urban society.
Through this transformation, LMI hopes that Lippo Icon Cibubur can become one of the new lifestyle icons in the Cibubur area and its surroundings, while simultaneously addressing the needs of a public that increasingly prioritises convenience, connectivity, and experience when choosing daily activity destinations.
