Shooting near White House leaves one suspect dead

US Secret Service shot and killed a man near the White House on Saturday (23 May) after he attempted to approach a security checkpoint and fired at officers, according to US media reports. The gunfire triggered a lockdown at the White House, with a civilian in the vicinity critically injured. The suspect, who died in hospital, is believed to have been experiencing emotional distress. The incident occurred near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street Northwest, just outside the White House complex. ABC News White House correspondent Selina Wang said: “I was recording a social media video from the north lawn of the White House using my iPhone when we heard gunfire. It sounded like dozens of shots. We were ordered to run to the briefing room where we are now.”
