Shoe firm staff nabbed for theft

JAKARTA (JP): The North Jakarta Police on Tuesday arrested nine drivers of a noted export-oriented footwear company for allegedly stealing shoes which were ready to be shipped overseas.

North Jakarta Police chief Lt. Col. Setyanto said the nine admitted during preliminary questioning that they repeatedly stole the company's products while on assignment to deliver the shoes to Tanjung Priok port to be exported.

"The shoes they stole were Nike and Reebok products," he said.

The shoes were sold for Rp 900,000 a pair in shopping centers here, but the suspects sold them for only Rp 30,000 each, Setyanto said.

The suspects and dozens of pairs of the stolen shoes were being kept at the North Jakarta police station, pending further investigation. (bsr)
