Shocking Confession from Driver of Car Travelling in the Wrong Direction in Central Jakarta, Attacked by Mob! Claims He Was Heading to Ancol

Jakarta, VIVA - The driver of a black Toyota Calya, named Hafiz Mahendra, who drove in the wrong direction in the Gunung Sahari area, Central Jakarta, and was attacked by a mob, claimed that he was travelling from Karawang to Ancol for leisure.

Hafiz’s confession was revealed by the Director of Traffic at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Police Commissioner Komarudin, based on the results of the investigation.

“He said he was coming from Karawang to go for a walk in Ancol. That’s what he said,” he said on Thursday, February 26, 2026.

In the car, Hafiz was with a woman who did not have any identification. The woman is suspected to be his girlfriend. However, the police are not immediately convinced by Hafiz’s confession and are continuing their investigation.

For your information, the reckless actions of the driver of a Toyota Calya with license plate number D 1640 AHB in the Jalan Gunung Sahari area, Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, went viral on social media. The car was driving in the wrong direction, causing a commotion and eventually leading to the driver being attacked by a mob.

The video of the incident was uploaded to the Instagram account @amq_mnl. The recording shows that the black Calya car was almost stopped by officers, even with warning shots. However, the driver refused and continued driving in the wrong direction.

The situation became even more heated when the vehicle also hit several motorcycles and cars at the location. Residents and other drivers, who were angry, immediately tried to stop the car. The car, which eventually stopped, was then attacked.

The rear window and front body were damaged due to being hit by objects thrown by angry residents. The Chief of the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Police Commissioner Reynold E.P. Hutagalung, confirmed that they had secured the driver, named Hafiz Mahendra (25), a resident of Sidoarjo, East Java.

“Before the traffic accident occurred, the minibus with license plate number D-1640-AHB, which was driven by Mr. Hafiz Mahendra, was travelling from north to south,” he said on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
