REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON – Israel’s sudden attack on Iran’s South Pars gas field was immediately countered by strikes on oil and gas facilities in Gulf countries. This dangerous escalation is reported to have prompted US President Donald Trump to plead for Iran to stop its attacks. “For the third time today, Washington has sent a message through regional states requesting that the war be halted,” according to the Iranian media account Iran Now on Thursday. The US request was accompanied by threats of assassinations against Iranian leaders if they act hastily. “Iran reaffirms that its position has not changed. There will be no ceasefire until the country’s objectives, as stated by its officials, are achieved.” Trump’s change in stance on the ongoing war was confirmed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. He has openly expressed thanks for what he described as a recent signal from Donald Trump that he is ready to end the attacks on Iran. “I am very grateful that the US president sent a signal on this matter last night that he is ready to end the fighting,” Merz told reporters ahead of the EU summit in Brussels. He added that Europe is prepared to help stabilise the Middle East once the fighting stops. His comments came after Trump stated on Truth Social that Israel had “attacked hard” Iran’s Pars oil field without Washington’s knowledge. Trump also promised that there would be no further Israeli attacks on that oil field. Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the IRGC’s Khatam al-Anbiya Headquarters stated that Iran’s response to the attack on its energy infrastructure “is not over.” In a statement broadcast by the ISNA news agency, the spokesperson said that if attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure recur, the response will be “far more severe.” “We warn the enemy that you have made a grave mistake by attacking energy infrastructure… in Iran,” he said. “If this happens again, the next attack on your energy infrastructure and that of your allies will not stop until it is completely destroyed.” The US and Israel began illegal attacks on Iran on 28 February. The strikes occurred as reports indicated that negotiations between the US and Iran were reaching a point of agreement. Around 2,000 Iranian citizens died as a result of those attacks. Meanwhile, Iran retaliated by targeting US assets in Gulf countries and closing the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial sea route for global oil and gas distribution.
