Residents of Ketewel Village, Gianyar Regency, Bali, were alarmed by the discovery of a severed human head. The severed remains were found floating in the estuary of the Wos River, Tan Sema Beach or Ketewel Beach coastline.

The human head was first discovered by a resident jogging on Thursday 26 June at 10.00 Wita. The initial witness spotted a suspicious object floating in the river estuary. Upon closer inspection, the object turned out to be a human head.

In addition to the severed head, residents discovered other human body parts on the rocks of a wave breaker at the beach’s edge. The body parts found ranged from arms, thighs, organs, upper left chest, to severed feet.

“There is suspicion of mutilation, but we are still investigating the exact cause. The Bali Regional Police and Gianyar District Police are working together on investigating this case,” said Gianyar Police Chief AKBP Chandra Kesuma.

Chandra revealed identifying marks including a tattoo depicting a clock and an image of the Virgin Mary on the victim’s arm. Meanwhile, on the severed head, there were findings of skin condition that had already peeled and thinning hair.

Chandra suspected the human remains discovered may be connected to a case involving the abduction of a Ukrainian national. However, this has not yet been confirmed.

“Whether the victim is connected to the abduction case, we are still awaiting the results of scientific investigation,” emphasised the former Tabanan Police Chief.
