Several ships have been deployed to support the evacuation process of passengers and crew of the Passenger Motor Ship (KMP) Mutiara Sentosa 2, which caught fire in the waters of Sumenep, East Java, on Sunday morning. The vessel was operating on the Surabaya-Makassar route.

“Based on the results of coordination with joint officers who are currently moving towards the scene, the location is at coordinates 06°30’64” LS and 114°00’19” BT, or approximately in the waters of Sumenep Regency, about 19 nautical miles north of Sapudi Island,” said the Head of Public Relations for the Sumenep Police, AKP Widiarti.

“There are nine ships deployed there to carry out the evacuation,” she added.

According to Widiarti, the vessels deployed to evacuate the passengers and crew of KMP Mujuara Sentosa 2 include KN SAR 249 Permadi, a vessel from the Surabaya SAR Office, a vessel from the Sumenep SAR Post, the Surabaya Harbour Master vessel, the Surabaya VTS vessel, SROP Kalianget, KSOP Kalianget, the Meratur Project 3 vessel, and TB Hasnur 26.

The Sumenep SAR Post has also deployed personnel to the site of the burning ship to assist in passenger rescue efforts. Local police personnel from nearby stations have also been mobilised to join the rescue team.

The KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2, which caught fire while travelling from Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya to Makassar, was reported to be carrying 250 people.
