Shipping firms suspended

JAKARTA (JP): The government has revoked licenses of 14 local shipping companies for not providing annual reports of their activities and neglecting to fly Indonesian flags, an official said.

Director General of Transportation, Soentoro, said Thursday that stern warnings were issued to 51 others for similar offenses.

Most of the suspended companies are based in Surabaya, East Java.

The suspended firms and their operation bases are PT Cendrawasih Jaya Raya (Merauke), PT Cipta Sarana Nugraha (Semarang), PT Satria Sakti Buana (Cilacap), PT Armatis Lines (Surabaya), PT Difeno Usaha Pratama (Surabaya), PT Karaeng Tamparang (Surabaya) and PT Karuna Samudra Jaya (Surabaya).

The rest are PT Sukses Sempurna Ship, PT Multi Asia Berkara, PT Mitra Ocean Lines and PT Tata Suradi Raya, all based in Surabaya, Soentoro told Antara.

The government is imposing stricter measures to improve the operations of shipping companies, most of which act as brokers instead of operators. (icn)
