Ship with Iraqi oil seized
KUWAIT (Reuters): Kuwait seized a ship in its territorial
waters on Saturday for allegedly trying to smuggle 1,500 tonnes
of crude oil out of former occupier Iraq in violation of United
Nations sanctions.
The vessel was carrying 13 crew members -- five Indians and
eight Iraqis -- Kuwait's Interior Ministry said in a statement
sent to Reuters. It did not give the nationality of the ship.
The UN placed strict sanctions against Iraq for invading
Kuwait in August 1990, but under the supervision of the world
body, Iraq is allowed to sell oil to finance the import of some
basic goods and medicines.
