Ship nabbed for illegal sugar

MEDAN, North Sumatra: The Customs and Excise Office at Belawan port in Medan apprehended a cargo ship allegedly smuggling 400 tons of sugar on Tuesday at Teluk Nibung port, Tanjung Balai regency.

The ship, which was transporting the sugar from Port Klang in Malaysia, was seized when the captain, Awaludin, 50, was unable to show proper shipping and cargo documents.

The captain has been charged with smuggling sugar into Indonesian territory, while his three crew members walked free after questioning, said Bewan customs and excise head Supratiknya. -- JP
