Ship Carrying 17 Cattle and 1,000 LPG Cylinders Sinks in South Sulawesi
A ship transporting 17 cattle and 1,000 LPG gas cylinders has reportedly sunk while anchored at Kauwau Port, Pasilambena District, Selayar Islands Regency, South Sulawesi.
“It is true, the ship was carrying approximately 24 tonnes of copra, 17 cattle, and about 1,000 LPG gas cylinders,” said Aipda Suardi Andre, Head of Public Relations for the Selayar Islands Police, on Monday (18/5).
The incident occurred on Sunday (17/5) at approximately 04:30 WITA. The KM Bintang Kayuadi was travelling from Latokdok Port to Kauwau Port, carrying agricultural products, livestock, and gas cylinders.
According to Andre, the cause of the accident was related to the tide. “When departing from Latokdok Port, the tide was high, and it remained high upon arrival at Kauwau Port. The crew tied the boat to the pier, but as the tide receded, the mooring ropes snapped, causing the ship to capsize,” he explained.
Upon receiving the report, the police coordinated with relevant authorities to manage the situation. The vessel was manned by four crew members and one ship owner.
Andre confirmed that all crew members and the ship owner were found safe. However, the loss of livestock was significant, with 13 cattle confirmed dead. “From the group, the four crew members and the owner are safe. Thirteen cattle died; two were found on land, while three remain missing,” he added.
