Zakat does not only cleanse the wealth of those who pay it, but also purifies the hearts of those who receive it. According to Sheikh Yusuf Qardhawi, zakat can eliminate dangerous diseases in the form of envy, spite, and hatred that often arise due to the pressures of poverty and social inequality. Through zakat, the bonds of brotherhood within society are preserved, and feelings of hostility between the rich and the poor can be prevented. “For miserliness and selfishness will only breed resentment and envy towards anyone who possesses blessings,” wrote Sheikh Yusuf Qardhawi in his book. Islam has established relationships between human beings on the basis of brotherhood among them. The foundation of this brotherhood is the equality of humanity and the equality of faith. The Prophet Muhammad SAW said, “Be you servants of Allah as brothers.” He also said, “Every Muslim is a brother to every other Muslim.” According to Sheikh Yusuf Qardhawi, this brotherhood will not stand if one brother is full while the other is hungry. If the one who is full knows his brother is hungry but ignores him and offers no assistance, then this means severing the elements of brotherhood and igniting the fire of hatred and envy in the hearts of the poor who are prevented from receiving sustenance against the rich who possess wealth. Islamic teachings do not wish for such a situation to occur.
