Sharks were suspected to have appeared in The Nusa Dua coastal waters, Badung, on Friday, 22 May 2026. ITDC, the developer and manager of The Nusa Dua, confirmed the situation is safe and the suspected sharks do not pose a danger to humans.

General Manager I Made Agus Dwiatmika stated the coastal area remains secure, with no panic reported among tourists or locals. “We can confirm that security teams on the ground have not encountered any panic-inducing situations or disturbing reports from the public or tourists,” he said on Sunday, 24 May 2026.

He explained that on Friday at approximately 9:30 am WITA, ITDC patrol teams, alongside police and vital object security personnel, observed an object resembling a fish fin in open waters. However, the distance from the shoreline prevented confirmation of the object’s identity. “The object was located far from the shoreline and away from tourist areas. The team could not determine its type due to the distance,” he added.

On Saturday, 23 May, further monitoring detected no further sightings, confirming the area’s safety. Dwiatmika noted similar incidents occurred in 2013 and 2019, when blacktip sharks approached the coast while following plankton and small fish movements. These sharks are typically shy, avoid humans, and pose no threat as their diet consists of small fish, squid, and crustaceans.

He added that the shark appearance indicates a well-maintained marine ecosystem in Nusa Dua. ITDC, in coordination with the Marine Police and Balawista, continues routine monitoring to ensure tourist safety. “We urge the public and tourists to remain calm and follow on-ground officers’ instructions. Further updates will be provided as verified information becomes available,” he concluded.
