PROVINCE of Shanxi, one of China’s main energy industry bases, continues to broaden international cooperation in the energy and trade sectors, including with Indonesia. The move comes amid rising demand for energy transformation and the development of new-energy technologies in the Asia region.

From 10 to 12 May 2026, Shanxi’s Department of Commerce led an economic and trade delegation to Indonesia to participate in the Indonesia International Coal & Energy Industry Expo and to promote the province’s energy industry and explore business cooperation.

The visit occurred amid growing energy cooperation between China and Indonesia, including within the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which fosters collaboration in investment, infrastructure, and energy transformation in the region.

The Shanxi delegation used the Indonesia International Coal & Energy Industry Expo as a platform to promote Shanxi’s energy industry strengths and to introduce the China (Taiyuan) International Energy Industry Expo 2026 as one of the largest energy industry events in the region.

The Shanxi government said the expo has been held ten times and has developed into an important forum for global energy industry players to showcase technology, products, and latest innovations.

In 2026, the China (Taiyuan) International Energy Industry Expo is planned to cover an exhibition area of 60,000 square metres with three main zones: the Innovation Outcomes Zone, the Comprehensive Zone, and the Professional Zone.

The exhibition area will showcase developments in energy transformation technology, science and technology innovation, integrated energy, intelligent equipment, and new energy.

Technologies to be showcased include wind power, solar energy, energy storage, hydrogen, digitalisation of coal mining, 5G-based smart mining, as well as digital operating systems and maintenance for the energy sector.

In addition to the exhibition, a number of forums and industry activities will be held to bring together business players, regulators, and energy experts from various countries to discuss the direction of global energy transformation and the future of the energy industry.

As one of the largest coal-producing provinces in China, Shanxi is also a pilot area for the country’s national energy reform. In addition to coal, the region has reserves of coalbed methane and bauxite supporting diversification of the energy industry.

Shanxi officials view Indonesia as strategically positioned in energy cooperation due to its large coal resources, a growing energy industry, and needs for energy transformation that align with Shanxi’s energy industry development.

‘We sincerely invite companies, institutions, and energy experts from around the world to gather in Taiyuan in September to strengthen cooperation and build a better energy future,’ said the organisers in an official statement.

During the visit to Indonesia, the Shanxi delegation also held meetings with government agencies, business associations, and several energy companies to discuss opportunities for energy and trade cooperation in both regions.

The delegation also reviewed the operations of Shanxi-based companies operating abroad as part of an effort to strengthen the province’s international expansion of the energy industry.

The Shanxi government hopes that economic and energy ties between Indonesia and Shanxi can be further strengthened, including through collaboration in technology development, investment, and sustainable energy transformation in both regions.
