Shanghai Electric Supports World's Largest Single Bio-Methanol Bunkering for Ships
On 17 August, Shanghai Electric Company (SEHK: 02727, SSE: 601727) collaborated with Shanghai International Port Group and CMA CGM Group in a bio-methanol bunkering operation for ships with a total volume of 8,000 metric tonnes. The operation was recorded as the world’s largest single bio-methanol bunkering. The bunkering ceremony, held at Yangshan Port in Shanghai, carried the theme ‘Green Fueled Globe, Lead the Future’.
Shanghai Electric’s Taonan green methanol project served as the primary supplier of bio-methanol for the mission. This achievement not only demonstrates a significant improvement in supply capacity but also confirms the Taonan project’s ability to maintain stable production and supply of products on a large scale.
The success was supported by an integrated cross-regional green fuel supply chain. At the Shanghai International Shipping Green Fuel Sustainable-Development Conference held on 30 June 2026, Shanghai, Jilin, and Liaoning officially launched a green fuel transport corridor. This corridor connects the methanol production base at the Taonan project in Jilin with methanol transit and storage processes at Dalian Port and bunkering at Shanghai Port.
As the main production base within the corridor, Shanghai Electric’s Taonan green methanol project utilises Jilin’s abundant wind and solar energy potential, as well as biomass feedstock. The facility features a complete process system and independently developed core equipment, making it the world’s first large-scale plant to produce bio-methanol by combining green electricity and biomass. The facility meets the bunkering needs of ships at the Shanghai International Shipping Center and provides essential support for the development of three major green fuel hubs for international shipping.
Shanghai Electric will continue to develop the green fuel industry chain comprehensively, from production, storage, and transport to the utilisation of various types of green fuels. The company will also strengthen core technology research and continuously improve integrated green fuel solutions. To drive industry progress through technological innovation, Shanghai Electric is collaborating with several partners to accelerate the construction of an integrated Green Methanol and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project combining green hydrogen with biomass gasification (Taonan Project Phase II). The company will gradually increase its large-scale green fuel supply capacity to meet the needs of the aviation and maritime sectors. Shanghai Electric will also continue to support the achievement of China’s dual-carbon targets and promote the global transition towards clean, low-carbon energy.
